Two Cheap and Easy Valentine's Day Crafts

As soon as Christmas is over, I am ready to dive right in to the pink goodness that is Valentine's Day.  I love the color pink.  Pink anything and everything.

A few days ago, I headed to a nearby dollar store to fuel my pink passion on some cheap Valentines Day goodies.  I was met with a store void of anything that remotely resembled Valentine's decor.  The shelves had just been emptied of leftover Christmas decorations.  There was nothing.  No pink, no red, no hearts or flowers.  I wanted to turn around and walk out.  I was determined to come home with something pink though so I grabbed a pack of pink tissue paper.  That's it.  Well, not really, I also grabbed a bag of candy cherry sours to make me feel better.  After all, it's impossible to leave a dollar store without some of their cheap candy.  Right?

I ended up making something from the pink tissue paper.  I want to show you that and another cheap, dollar store craft that I made last year.  Both of these crafts cost me a total of $3.00.

First, the tissue paper craft.  I have been wanting to make some tissue paper peonies since I saw them on Pinterest several months ago.  A simple search on Pinterest for "tissue paper flowers" will give you lots of pictures and blog posts with excellent tutorials on how to make them.  Most of the pictures that I saw were of large peonies that were hung from the ceiling of a home or used as a grouping for wall decor.

I wanted to make a small bouquet of pink peonies using a small amount of tissue paper.  I bought 2 sheets of "hot pink" tissue paper at the dollar store.  I used those plus one sheet of pale pink tissue paper that I already had (yes, I am one of those people that saves tissue paper after opening gifts).  I took pictures of what I did to make the peonies so you could see how easy it is.  To give you an idea of size and proportion, I laid out the paper on a 12x12 floor tile.

Cut tissue paper into rectangles (2 layers shown) and fold "accordion style".   Secure the middle with a string or thin piece of wire.

Cut the ends to an oval, pointed shape. Fold in half (vertically) and secure center again.  Fold in half (horizontally) at middle and separate (fluff) each layer of paper to form flower.

I used a small thin twist tie to secure the middle of my tissue paper fold.  I have to admit that the hardest part of this for me was separating the layers of tissue paper to form a flower.  I'm not a very patient person and this requires a good bit of it.  I admit to tearing, creasing and crinkling many "petals".  It's OK in the end though, it still looks good.  Remember, peonies are not perfect.  Their petals are disorganized, misshapen, messy and....beautiful.  That's why I love them so much.

The last picture in the strip above will show you the two different shades of pink that I used.  Notice how wrinkled my "recycled" pale pink piece is.  Again, it was ideal for the imperfect petals of a peony.

When I was done fluffing up all of my little flowers, I gathered them up and placed them in a plain white coffee cup.  I call it my Cup O' Peonies!

The next craft is so easy that no step by step pictures are required.  Or it could be that I forgot to take them, oops!  Seriously, this one is super easy.  I bought two fake bouquets of pink rose buds at the dollar store.  Then I destroyed it by plucking all of the buds off of the stems.  I poked the bottom of each bud into a styrofoam sphere (secured with hot glue).  There is no pattern to follow with the placement of the rose buds....just put them as close together as you can.  Suspend the sphere from a ribbon (I used a floral pin to connect the ribbon to the ball).

Ta-da!  Now you have a Valentine's Day Kissing Ball....kiss away!

OK, here is the breakdown in costs:

Hot pink tissue paper - $1.00 (dollar store)
Pale pink tissue paper - already had
White coffee cup - 25 cents (Goodwill)

2 pink rose bud bouquets $1.75 (dollar store)
        styrofoam sphere - already had
ribbon & floral pin - already had

There you go, cheap and easy....crafting, the way I like it :)

All Star Block Party #32

Welcome, friends!  I'm sorry to be late with the start of tonight's All Star Block Party.  I've had the craziest day!  It started with dense fog and a big traffic jam on the interstate.  Ugh!  We're expecting cold temperatures (at least "cold" for down here in the South) tomorrow.  I'll take it as long as the fog stays away.  Is it cold where you live?

Enough of my drama....let's get on with the party.  Here are a few things that caught my eye from last week's party.

1.  Blue Roof Cabin shared a vanity remodel with a custom milk paint mixture.  Don't you just love the color!

2.  I think the 365 Photo-a-Day Project by The Jack Chronicles is amazing!  Can you imagine the patience and dedication it must have taken for someone to do this?  Fantastic!

3.  I love the recipes at Amy's Cooking Adventures and I'm dying to try her French Onion Soup in a bread bowl.  Just what I need for this cold weather!

4.  Valentines Day is approaching and I love all of the pink craft projects that I'm seeing out there.  I really like these cornstarch dough hearts made by Simply Creating Home.

Thank you to everyone that joined us last week.  If you were featured today, feel free to take a featured button from my sidebar.  You deserve it!  Now, let's get on with this week's party.  Link up your latest project or recipe and it will be shown on all of the All Star Block Party host's blogs.

Bad Habits of 2012

I'm not going to write a "Best of/Top Posts/Most Popular Projects" post this month.  I thought it would be more fun to write about my least favorite posts, biggest mistakes or bad habits of 2012.  Kind of strange, I guess, but I'm in a "do something different" phase right now so.....I give you....

My Top 5 Bad Habits of 2012

I got hooked on several trashy TV shows in 2012.  Shows that I call "good trashy".  Good as in interesting good, it's OK to watch good and let's talk about them on twitter good.  My current favorite trashy (if that's what you want to call them) TV shows are:  The Maury Show, Days of Our Lives and The Bachelor.

I became hopelessly addicted to the internet in 2012.  One of the first things that I do every morning (after making coffee, of course) is to turn on my laptop to check my email and various social media accounts.  I don't know how I've managed to not melt the thing from overuse.  I have to force myself to take a break from it so it won't blow up.  Here is the really bad part....as soon as I turn the laptop off, I grab my tablet or smartphone.  I'm not the only one that does that, am I?

One of the biggest reasons that I feel so compelled to be on the internet all the time comes from my addiction to social media.  You've probably seen me "talking" about Google+ lately.  It became my "pet project" in 2012.  I get so excited about the new features and popularity of it.  And then there is Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram.

Should I call Instagram a bad habit?  My habit started out small.  I took a few pictures with my iphone, uploaded them to Instagram and joined in the fun of a blogger's Instagram Blog Hop.  No biggy, right?  Wrong.  Now I want to use my iphone for all of my photography and I'm constantly looking at other pictures on Instagram to get inspiration for mine.  My teenage son has even noticed my obsession.  He gave me a telephoto lens that attaches to my iphone for Christmas.

My Twitter and Instagram addiction created another bad habit for me in 2012.

Don't get me wrong, hashtags can be a great thing.  Using them in social media postings can "tag" your post for searches and increase your SEO.  But I developed a bad habit of using them for fun.  If you've been on Twitter or Instagram lately, you will see people put their thoughts in hashtag form at the end of their tweet/post. Example....#dontjudgeme #twitterjunkie #thispostistoolong.  Ask me a question, I'll answer it and think of a few hashtag quotes (in my head) to go with it.  Really, I do that!

OK, there is my top 5.  I know there are some "list 5 things" link parties out there to share this post at.  Wonder where I can find them?  #linkyhere #duh!

The Google+ Communities Link Up

If you've been around Google+ lately, you know about the current popularity of their newest feature, Communities.  It's the new "hot" thing and a great way to socialize with people that have the same interests that you do.  I posted about the blogger benefits of joining a Google+ community several days ago (find it here).

Every day, there are new communities formed that are centered around specific interests such as blogging, crafting, social media, food, fashion, photography....the list goes on and on.  There are so many amazing communities on Google+ right now and I want to help you find them.  What better way to do that than a link up!

If you moderate a community on Google+ and would like to let everyone know about it, link it up.  You can do that by adding your community page info in the inLinkz widget below.  Here is an example of how to do it:

The community home page link will look similar to this:
https://plus.google.com/communities/110823371848850381833
For the thumbnail picture, use the community's "profile image".

If you want to find some communities to join for a particular interest or topic, this is one way to do it!  Look around, click on a link to bring you to the community page. Once there, you can read about the community before you decide to join it.

There are NO RULES to this link up.  Just make sure the community that you link up is "family friendly" and have FUN!  I want to provide a source of information to bloggers and help "get the word out" about new (and existing) communities.  I will share this link up on Google+ (of course), twitter, facebook, pinterest and any other social media site that I can.

All Star Block Party #31

Ready to party?  We are!

Guess what I'm drinking while I write this post?  A Cape Cod Kiss.  It was one of my featured recipes from last week.  I wish I could give you a taste of it....sooooo good!  Mine is the sans alcohol version though (I still have mommy duties tonight).  Want to see it & get the recipe?  Click here.

Let me show you few things I liked from last week's party.

1.  My Turn for us shared her recipe for Easy Shrimp Dip in a bread bowl.  As a football fan, I'm always looking for a good dip recipe on Sundays.  This one has my favorite "cooking word" in it...EASY!

2.  Fun Home Things shared some of her home's January decorations.  I love the simplicity and elegance of this shelf vignette.  I love the cool (2 meanings for that word) color scheme too.

3.  We had several year in review posts submitted last week.  I love these because it's a great way to find new (to me) blogs to follow.  I found The Ironstone Nest!  Take a look at some of her most popular posts.

4.  Here is another one that I liked:  the top five 2012 posts from Creative Country Mom's.  I picked my favorite....the pink picket fence bench!

Thank you to everyone that joined us last week.  If you were featured today, feel free to take a featured button from my sidebar.  You deserve it!  Now, let's get on with this week's party.  Link up your latest project or recipe and it will be shown on all of the All Star Block Party host's blogs.

Google+ Blog Hop - January

Welcome to another Google+ Blog Hop!  This is where we come together, get to know each other and support a growing social media platform.  Google+ has a lot to offer bloggers and small business owners in terms of growth, marketing and  SEO.  Let's unite and support the blogging community by adding each other to our circles.  We will grow TOGETHER!

I try to share any tips or tricks about how to use and "master" Google+ that I find so you can reap all of the benefits that it can offer.  Today, I want to share a book that I found, What the Plus by Guy Kawasaki.  It's a terrific, easy to understand,  bare bones basic tutorial on Google+.   If you really want to learn how to use this social media site effectively, you must read this book.  You can find a link to the free PDF copy of it from Guy Kawasaki's g+ page.

To join this g+ blog hop, link up your Google+ profile page URL (NOT your blog's homepage).  For the "name" section, use your name or your blog's/website's name.  Use your personal photo or your blog's/website's button/logo for the thumbnail picture.

Important note:  If you have problems linking up your profile page, try linking the "about" section of your profile page instead of the "posts" section.  Also, problems loading a thumbnail picture usually can be solved by loading the picture directly from your computer instead of your g+ page

You may link your g+ profile page at any of the blogs listed below:

 Dukes and Duchesses (co-host)

We would appreciate it if you would also follow the hosts of this blog hop (add them to your circles).  All of the host's g+ profile pages can be found at the top of the list.

This blog hop is only for g+ pages...please do not link up your blog's url.  We encourage the sharing of your personal, blog or business' g+ (profile) page.  After you link up your g+ profile page, please visit some of the other profiles that are linked up and add them to your circles.  We want you to help your fellow bloggers' g+ page grow!

How to Use Google+ Communities to Grow Your Blog

I am so pleased to see more and more bloggers using Google+ as a way to communicate with other bloggers.   I started my "join Google+ crusade" and monthly G+ Blog Hop last summer with the hopes that bloggers would realize the benefits that come from using this growing social media platform for their blogs and businesses.   Since then, Google+ has released several new features.  The communities feature is the latest one.  How do you use it and how can it help grow your blog?  Keep reading....

First, the basics on how to use the communities feature.  Joining a community is simple.  From your G+ "home" page, click the communities icon on the left side of the page.  It looks like this:

When you click on the icon, you will see a collection of recommended communities.  If you see one that interest you, click on it to find out more about it.  Ready to join? Simply click on the "Join community" button at the top of the page.

If you've already joined a community, you can quickly find it by hovering your mouse over the communities icon.  A list of communities that you are a member of will slide out.  Click on the one that you want to go to and, BOOM, you're there!

Google+ communities are a great way to communicate and interact with people that have similar interests and goals as you.  For example, if you are a "foodie" and like to blog, read or talk about food and recipes then joining a food community on Google+ is for you.  Sharing your food blog or website with the community members will increase it's exposure and following.  The same can be said for craft, fashion, photography, decor, etc......blogs or websites. You get to meet and discover other food blogs or websites and they get to meet and discover YOU.  Win win!

Also, think of the possibilities for business.  Do you own an Etsy or Storenvy shop that sells handmade items?  You could join (or create) a Google+ community of handmade business owners that create and sell similar items as you do.  Not only can it be a wonderful marketing tool for your business but you can gain information from other members about things like selling tips, new tools or resources.

I don't have some secret way of figuring out how to use the features of Google+ (or any other social media platform for that matter).  I simply read the site's help and FAQ section.  It's for public use.  It's there for a reason...USE it!  If you want to know more about G+ communities (like how to start one), I'll help you get there:

http://support.google.com/plus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2888328&topic=2888488&ctx=topic

Before I climb off of my soapbox, let me just say this.  Social media sites, such as Google+ are the best way to get your blog or brand name "out there" if that's what you want.  Don't sit around waiting for people to come to you.  You'll get lonely real fast.  Join a social media site (or several of them) and just start talking!  Start with a Google+ community...at least you'll know what the topic is ;)

Update (1/10/13):  Since writing this post, I have had several requests for specific community recommendations (ex. decor, craft, diy, photography...).  There are SO many communities being formed that it was getting hard for me to keep up!  So....I started a link up for G+ Communities for YOU!  I want it to be a place to share existing communities so that others can easily FIND them.  You can find it here.

I also extended the time period of our January Google+ Blog Hop.  Find it here.

All Star Block Party #30

Happy New Year!

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year holiday.  I spent a few days changing my blog design during the holidays.  The geek in me likes to spend my free time doing stuff like that.  My New Year's resolution "word" is simplify so I started with my blog :)

Are you ready to start partying with us again?  I rounded up several projects from our last party (2 weeks ago) and thought I would share them with you.

1.  The first thing I want to show you is a pair of angel wings made out of...paper plates!  Can you believe how cute that is?  It's from Blissfully Shabby and you must jump over there to see the close up of the frame that you see in between the two wings.  I love that too!

2.  Second, Art is Beauty, shared this amazing wine cart makeover with us.  She cleaned it up and stenciled it....awesome find for only $5! (why can't I ever get that lucky?)

3.  The third project is from While Wearing Heels and was submitted as an idea for a Christmas ornament but I think it will be great for Valentine's Day too, don't you?

4.  Speaking of Valentine's Day, the "Cape Cod Kiss" beverage by Organized Island will be perfect for V Day too!

Thanks to everyone that submitted projects and recipes to our last party.  We certainly missed seeing all of your creations last week and are anxious to get back in the swing of things now.

So, let's go.....link up your latest project or recipe with us and it will be shown on all of the All Star Block Party host's blogs:

The Rules:

  • Keep your links family friendly and only link up projects made by YOU.
  • No business pages, giveaways or link parties allowed.
