As soon as Christmas is over, I am ready to dive right in to the pink goodness that is Valentine's Day. I
love the color pink. Pink anything and everything.
A few days ago, I headed to a nearby dollar store to fuel my pink passion on some cheap Valentines Day goodies. I was met with a store void of anything that remotely resembled Valentine's decor. The shelves had just been emptied of leftover Christmas decorations. There was nothing. No pink, no red, no hearts or flowers. I wanted to turn around and walk out. I was determined to come home with something pink though so I grabbed a pack of pink tissue paper. That's it. Well, not really, I also grabbed a bag of candy cherry sours to make me feel better. After all, it's impossible to leave a dollar store without some of their cheap candy. Right?
I ended up making something from the pink tissue paper. I want to show you that and another cheap, dollar store craft that I made last year. Both of these crafts cost me a total of $3.00.
First, the tissue paper craft. I have been wanting to make some tissue paper peonies since I saw them on Pinterest several months ago. A simple search on Pinterest for "tissue paper flowers" will give you lots of pictures and blog posts with excellent tutorials on how to make them. Most of the pictures that I saw were of large peonies that were hung from the ceiling of a home or used as a grouping for wall decor.
I wanted to make a small bouquet of pink peonies using a small amount of tissue paper. I bought 2 sheets of "hot pink" tissue paper at the dollar store. I used those plus one sheet of pale pink tissue paper that I already had (yes, I am one of those people that saves tissue paper after opening gifts). I took pictures of what I did to make the peonies so you could see how easy it is. To give you an idea of size and proportion, I laid out the paper on a 12x12 floor tile.

| Cut tissue paper into rectangles (2 layers shown) and fold "accordion style". Secure the middle with a string or thin piece of wire. |

Cut the ends to an oval, pointed shape. Fold in half (vertically) and secure center again. Fold in half (horizontally) at middle and separate (fluff) each layer of paper to form flower.

I used a small thin twist tie to secure the middle of my tissue paper fold. I have to admit that the hardest part of this for me was separating the layers of tissue paper to form a flower. I'm not a very patient person and this requires a good bit of it. I admit to tearing, creasing and crinkling
many "petals". It's OK in the end though, it still looks good. Remember, peonies are not perfect. Their petals are disorganized, misshapen, messy and....beautiful. That's why I love them so much.
The last picture in the strip above will show you the two different shades of pink that I used. Notice how wrinkled my "recycled" pale pink piece is. Again, it was ideal for the imperfect petals of a peony.
When I was done fluffing up all of my little flowers, I gathered them up and placed them in a plain white coffee cup. I call it my Cup O' Peonies!
The next craft is so easy that no step by step pictures are required. Or it could be that I forgot to take them, oops! Seriously, this one is super easy. I bought two fake bouquets of pink rose buds at the dollar store. Then I destroyed it by plucking all of the buds off of the stems. I poked the bottom of each bud into a styrofoam sphere (secured with hot glue). There is no pattern to follow with the placement of the rose buds....just put them as close together as you can. Suspend the sphere from a ribbon (I used a floral pin to connect the ribbon to the ball).
Ta-da! Now you have a Valentine's Day Kissing Ball....kiss away!
OK, here is the breakdown in costs:
Hot pink tissue paper - $1.00 (dollar store)
Pale pink tissue paper - already had
White coffee cup - 25 cents (Goodwill)
2 pink rose bud bouquets $1.75 (dollar store)
styrofoam sphere - already had
ribbon & floral pin - already had
There you go, cheap and easy....crafting, the way I like it :)
