My August Blog Angel Reveal

A few weeks ago, I told you about a great program that I was participating in called "Blog Angels".  It's a fabulous way to help another blogger by sharing some of your time, knowledge and kindness.  What a great way to promote sharing in blogland and "pay it forward" at the same time.

The blog angel program is run by Rosie from Craftbotic.  She hosts blogger connection link ups and assigns each blogger with a "blog angel".  Each blog angel then secretly helps their new blogger friend in some way(s)....like commenting on their blog posts, giving them shout outs on social media or helping them with blog design.  The possibilities are endless.

Today, I want to reveal who I have secretly been a blog angel to for the month of August.  Here name is Paige and she blogs at Eloping Stethoscopes!

Paige is a young nursing student that blogs about life and her experiences in nursing.  She also owns a storenvy shop, Eloping Designs, that sells some of her handmade jewelry, blog design elements and my favorite, a blog planner!

What have I done for her?  The first thing I did was sponsor her blog.  I was already a follower of hers on facebook and twitter.  So, on the day that I found out that I would be her blog angel, I quickly became one of her blog sponsors for the last half of August and the first part of September.  I also have been giving her bi-weekly blog hop shout outs on social media via my association with the LinkyHere.com website.  It's been a great way to "talk" about her Blog Working Wednesdays while staying "undercover", hehe!

I plan to stay in touch with Paige...especially since I will continue to sponsor her blog in September.  I have a guest post scheduled on her blog on Sept. 14th and will be co-hosting her Blog Working Wednesdays on Sept. 12th.  How cool is that?  It's a win/win for both of us!

Will I do this again? Yes, yes, yes!  I LOVE the sharing and friendships that result from the blog angel program.  I'm anxiously awaiting the sign up for October.  If you want to join me, click here for more information.  Rosie will be signing people up on Sept. 15th.  Hope to see you there!

Pin-tabulous Thursday #14 - Blogging Tips

I missed this post last week.  Did you notice?  I didn't even think about it until the weekend, ha!  I've got to get used to it now being on a Thursday instead of a Tuesday.

Anyway, I spent some time on Pinterest this week and realized that some of my boards held a lot of outdated pins.  Particularly, my board named "blog stuff".   I still had pins on it from some of last years Christmas link parties.  Geesh!  I still need to do some work on that board but I did compile a list of some of my favorite blogging tip pins to share with you.  As always, I will put a link underneath the picture where you can go to find the details of a particular pin.

MPORTANT:  Please do NOT pin an image from this blog post.  The pins (photos) shown on this blog post are NOT my property and should NOT be referenced back to my blog in any way.  Please refer to the original source if you would like to pin an image.

I'll start with one of the most important things you can do for your blog...back it up!

All Star Bock Party #12 and Features

Welcome to another week of our All Star Block Party.  I can't wait to see what y'all have been up to!  Here are a few features from last week's party.

Ugly Duckling Transformations shared this beautiful pedestal table transformation with CeCe Caldwell chalk paint in Vintage White.

Three Dogs at Home shared this chandelier makeover.  In the spirit of "use what you've got", she used a hair straightening iron to help her cover the lampshades.

Mary's Kitchen shared one of my favorite treats, homemade popsicles, in two flavors:  Cranberry Mango and Mocha.  Yummy!

14 Sixty shared this unique, diy painted, chevron sign.  I love what it says.

If you were featured today, take one of our feature buttons to display on your blog.  You deserve it!

The Day that Changed Everything

Yesterday was a big day for my family.  My youngest son, Will, turned 10 years old.  While that may not seem unusual to many of you with young kids, it was everything to my husband and I.

.
Ten years ago, we weren't sure if we would ever see this day.  I was 35 weeks pregnant with my second child.  Early in the morning hours of August 19, 2002, I had a full placental abruption.  At home and in a small town with an ill-equipped hospital for major emergencies.  Without going into details, there was a lot of blood, a frantic ambulance ride and an emergency c-section.  I don't know how my son survived that day.

He survived and was sent to a larger hospital 60 miles away.  I was left in my hometown hospital recovering from a huge blood loss.  I hated being apart from my baby.

My son would stay in the hospital's NICU for almost four months.  I finally got to hold him when he was two weeks old.  This is my favorite picture of him at that time.  I think we captured his first smile.  I wish the picture was of better quality but we had to make do with what we had.

Over the years, he has endured many hospital visits, surgeries and what seems like a million doctor (clinic) visits.  Throughout it all, he has remained strong and seems to adapt to everything that is thrown at him.  He is truly my miracle baby.

We celebrated his 10th birthday with lots of balloons.  They are one his favorite things in the world.  With the help of my mom and sister, we blew up lots of balloons in bright colors and placed them all around him.

I even attempted to make a balloon banner to hang across a big window in my living room.  The idea came from Pinterest, of course :)

His birthday cake was decorated in a Curious George theme (his favorite cartoon).  It was made by a local bakery that makes the BEST chocolate cake with buttercream icing.  That's what I always order.  YUM!

My favorite picture from the day is this one.  My two boys....one a cute 17 year old that just started his senior year in high school and my sweet little man that made it into "double digits!"  I live for these kids.  Family always comes first in this house!

inLinkz Review - From Both Sides of the Fence

Do you recognize that cute little blue face?  It's the well known symbol of one of the most popular link party tools in blogland.  Chances are, you have used it at least once (if not many times) when you linked up a blog post to one of the many linky parties occurring in blogland.  I know I have.

I want to share my experience with inLinkz....as a link party guest and host.

I have used inLinkz many times in the past year as I shared my craft and DIY projects with some of my favorite blog's link parties.  I always found it easy to use....especially when it came to adding a thumbnail picture to my entry.  It was simple and fast.  That helps when you are a new blogger that links up to numerous link parties.

source

Several months ago, I teamed up with four other bloggers to host a weekly link party called the All Star Block Party.  It's a weekly craft/diy/food link party that has grown to over 100 link ups.  I usually manage the link tool for the group and I  recently started using the inLinkz tools.  My "job" of moderating the link ups for the party has become much easier....and less time consuming!  For a link party host, those two aspects are invaluable.

I also want to share my experience as a co-manager of the LinkyHere website.  LinkyHere is the wonderful creation of Aimee of byAimee.com.  In the most basic sense, it is a link party tool directory designed to help bloggers find a linky party to share their latest creation or blog post.  It is extremely organized.  Parties are categorized by the day of the week that they occur and by type of submissions....diy, food, sewing, etc.

When I started this new venture last month, Aimee told me about the directory.  "There a quite a few link categories to manage", she said.  When I logged on the site to find out what she meant, I was surprised to see over 15 pages of link categories!  My first thought...."what have I gotten myself into?"

Instead of running away, I decided to jump right in and see if I could do what I had already agreed to.  I was nervous and apprehensive.  How was I ever going to do this?  Surprisingly, it was super EASY!  LinkyHere uses the inLinkz tool for all of their link categories.  Moderating links and updating link party information was simple.  Things like changing or editing a thumbnail picture can be done quickly and easily.

InLinkz supports the LinkyHere website in so many ways.  Their support team is incredible....always available to answer any question or offer advice.  They are continually releasing new tools and helpful video tutorials to help even the most inexperienced, "newbie" blogger.

Today, the LinkyHere Blog is hosting an inLinkz Giveaway.  You have the chance to win a subscription to inLinkz for use on your blog.  It's a great opportunity to help your blog grow.  Click here for more information and a chance to win!  I'm headed over there right now....hope to see ya!

I'm a Blog Angel AGAIN!

I enjoyed the blog angel project by Craftbotic and Dreamy Meadow so much when I participated in it earlier this summer.  I love, love, love to help other bloggers with their growth in blogland so I really liked this project when I first heard about it.  I'm so glad I did because I have become good friends with my blog angel from June.  I "swapped" places with her in July....I became her blog angel :)

This month, I get to be a blog angel to a very energetic and active blogger.  She does so much that I can hardly keep up with her!  I follow her blog, twitter and facebook accounts and try to leave comments on her blog when I can.  It's hard though.  I'm always afraid she will find out who I am.

I was very happy to see so many bloggers participate in this project.  This is one of the best ways to meet new people and "pay it forward" all at the same time.  My June blog angel sent me a small angel pin last month...I love it.  I pinned it to a ribbon and have it hanging on the top corner of my computer screen.  It's a reminder about how great the blogging community is....and the good friends that come with it!

All Star Block Party #11 and Features

Before we start this week's party, let me show you a few things from last week that made me smile :)

Art is Beauty had me laughing at how she named this table rescue...the James Brown Table.  She also used my favorite color of CeCe Caldwell paint, Destin Gulf Green.

I'm from the South and nothing is better to us southerners than a freshly baked peach cobbler....like this one from Lil' Suburban Homestead.

Just look at this hall transformation from The Poor Sophisticate.  Do you see that wall at the end of the hall?  It's covered with the pages of an old book....love that!

I wish it were my birthday because I would want one of these cute cakes by Sew Incredibly Crazy.  I'm in love with the green one on the right!

If you have been featured today, take a button to show off on your blog....you deserve it!

How to Play the Social Media Game

As most of you know, I spent the summer obsessed with learning about social media.  I saw the potential that it has in growing blogs and I wanted to bring that information to you, my fellow bloggers.

I saw the most potential in Google+ so that is why I decided to spend the month of July talking about it on my blog.  I wanted you to get to know Google+ and learn a little about how to use it.  I followed up with a Google+ Blog Hop so that we could share our G+ pages with each other and help them grow.

I have to tell you, I was nervous and uncertain of how successful that blog hop would be.  It was new and different than the other types of blog hops that had been previously seen around blogland.  But, you surprised me.  I was hoping for maybe 20 or 30 linkups to the blog hop....you gave me over 130!  My fellow hosts and I are humbled and very grateful.

I have decided to continue to host a G+ blog hop on my blog, once a month.  My plan is to have the hop occur on the first Saturday of every month.  Due to the Labor Day holiday beginning in the first weekend of September, I have scheduled the September G+ blog hop to occur on Saturday, September 8th.  There were a few problems reported with linking up to the August blog hop so I will address those (with soultions) before the Sept. 8th blog hop.  I hope all of you will join me for this again.

Social media is a BIG part of the success of blogging.  Knowing how to use it to grow your blog is what I want to talk about next.   This applies to all social media sites, not just Google+.  There are three things that you MUST do to successfully utilize social media.

source

Learn It
In order to properly use social media to your advantage, you must know how to use it.  Don't just stop at opening an account and setting up a profile.  Research how to use it.  What are "the rules" of the site?  How do you post your blog's content on the site?  What are some tips and tricks that you can use?

One of the best sources of this information can be found in the social media site's help section.  Twitter, Facebook and Google+ have incredibly good help sections.  Just about every question that you can have is answered there.  If you have a specific question about how to do something, use the search box.  All help pages have them. The answer to your questions are easy to find.  YOU have to take time to read it.

Use It
Setting up your social media account is just the first step.  Now you have to use it.  And I don't mean just adding your blog's current post to Facebook, Google+ or Twitter.  You have to do more than that to engage your audience.  Don't just sit back and wait for readers to come to you, you have to make them want to read your posts.  You have to engage in conversation with others, ask questions and spark discussion.  Don't just make it all about your blog!  If readers find you interesting, they're more likely to find your blog interesting.  For example, on Facebook, you could post a picture of something that you like (room decor, food, paint color, etc.) and ask others what they think of it.  On Twitter, just ask a question....coke or pepsi?  It's simple.

Another way is to comment on someone else's post.  Try to make your social media presence known every day, even if it's only to say "hello" or to "like/+1" another person's post.

Build Your Influence
When it comes to "growing your blog", this is the most important aspect of social media.  It's all about how you use social media.  The more someone engages in some form of communication with you, the more influential you will appear on that social platform. With Google+, it's not how many people that you have in your circles, but how many people have you in their circles.  On Twitter and Facebook, it's about how many followers you have, not how many people that you follow.

Have you heard the buzz about Klout yet?  Don't know what Klout is?  Not many people do but it is something to pay attention to if you want to grow your blog.  Rumor has it (from the BlogHer conf.) that Klout is what "big brands" look at when considering a person or a blog for advertising.

source

Klout measures your online influence from social networks.  This is a quote directly from the Klout website.

"Klout measures influence online using data from your social networks. Anywhere you have an online presence, you have the opportunity to influence people by creating or sharing content that inspires actions such as likes, retweets, comments and more. The more engagement your posts receive, the more influential you are. Klout uses this information to provide you a Klout Score that measures your overall influence"

I'm still learning about Klout but I wanted to bring it to your attention.  It's important...especially if you are a small business owner.  It further emphasizes my point that you have to use social media in order to benefit from it.  Your social media influence will not be increased if you only post your blog's information (i.e. posts, linky parties, giveaways, etc.).  Start conversing and build relationships with other bloggers.  Do something on all of your social networks every day.  Remember this quote?: "If you build it, they will come".  Sometimes you have to start a conversation to be a part of one.

Pin-tabulous Thursday #13 - Crochet

Obviously, some things have changed with my weekly Pinterest post.  I decided to move it to Thursdays since the All Star Block Party starts on Tuesday nights.  I will be featuring some of my fellow bloggers' pictures...but, only the ones that I can link back to their site.  I want to support the blogging community so please, please, please take time to READ THIS:

IMPORTANT:  Please do NOT pin an image from this blog post.  The pins (photos) shown on this blog post are NOT my property and should NOT be referenced back to my blog in any way.  Please refer to the original source if you would like to pin an image.

Today, I want to devote this post to my love of crochet.  My grandmother made me fall in love with crocheting as a young girl.  She was really good at it and enjoyed it immensely.  I remember how my cousins and I would sit at the table with her as she showed us how to do each stitch.  We wanted to be like her.  I laugh now as I think back on those days...we would never be as good as she was.

My mom recently gave me a doll's dress that my grandmother made for her as a child.  It is exquisite.  She used very small pink and white cotton thread.  Over the years, it has yellowed and stained.  I want to get a "Barbie doll" model for it and display it in a shadow box.  It needs cleaning but I don't know how to do it without destroying the fragile thread.  Any ideas?

Recently, I've had the desire to start crocheting again.  I made a board on Pinterest, called "Crochet and quilts", so I could collect ideas about what to make.  Here are some of my pins from that board.

With Fall right around the corner, it's the perfect time to take up crocheting.  I hope you were as inspired by these pictures as I was.
