All Star Block Party #9 and Features

Welcome to another All Star Block Party.  I'm going to start with some features from last week's party.  You guys have been very creative lately!

Pamela from Sew Much Class and Crafty Too had her two "grandangels" visiting this summer so she had their picture made.  Look what she did with the picture...something that I have been wanting to try.  She filled a jar with olive oil and placed the picture inside.  I love the way it looks....like a sepia tone enhancement.

Next is this great baby shower idea...a "guess the delivery date" calender by While Wearing Heels.

A Little Bit of Everything shared a great way to cover up a scratched up tabletop...with chalkboard paint!

I'm envious when I see a good sewing project.  I really need to learn how to sew! Look at this upcycled denim and plaid pinafore by Navy Wifey Peters.  And the adorable model wearing it!

If you were featured, please take a featured button, you deserve it!

Pin-tabulous Tuesday #12 - Olympic Treats

I have been amazed at the creativity and enthusiasm that people have had about the Summer Olympic Games in London.  Especially when it comes to food.  Have you seen all of the goodies that are popping up on Pinterest in honor of the Olympic Games?  Most of it is in preparation for Olympic themed parties...which is such a good idea this summer.

To collect all of the inspiring Olympic themed pins that I've seen on Pinterest, I started a board called Olympics (clearly, I have no creativity when it comes to naming Pinterest boards, ha!)  All of the following pins come from that board.

IMPORTANT:  Please do NOT pin an image from this blog post.  The pins (photos) shown on this blog post are NOT my property and should NOT be referenced back to my blog in any way.  Please refer to the original source if you would like to pin an image.

I'm going to start with this one.  Can you guess what these rings are?

source
They're ONION RINGS!  I was surprised....but I'm not sure I would be able to eat them.  Would you?

Here is more Olympic "ring" food.

Now, for a few cupcakes.

Here is my favorite.  It's so cute and simple to make.  An Olympic gold medal cereal necklace!  Jewelry that you can eat?  Yes, please :)

Thanks for stopping by.  I enjoyed sharing some of my pin collection with you!

What Can Google+ Do For You? - Part 4 (small business)

Welcome to the final part (part 4) of my series on how G+ can benefit you, the blogger.  The first 3 parts of this series can be found below.

Part 1 (introduction to G+ and profile development)
Part 2 (understanding circles)
Part 3 (blogger benefits - SEO and +1)

Today's post will center around small businesses, such as Etsy or Storenvy shops and privately owned internet shops or boutiques.  As I mentioned in previous posts, you have the option of making your business a part of your personal G+ profile or creating a separate page for your business.  More information about this can be found in this Google article.

Most of the information that I provided in Part 3 of this series, about SEO and +1, will also greatly benefit the small business owner.  Remember, the more your G+ business page is recommended or +1'd (liked) by others, the greater the impact on your business' SEO (search engine optimization).

All of this can be influenced by 3 things:

1.  Profile and header image.  Choose a profile picture that represents your business logo or a personal picture of you.  Choose a cover picture to promote your business or product.  You're not restricted from using promotional messages (like on Facebook) so be creative.  For example, showcase a product or include your web address and logo.

2.  G+ circles are very important tools in business.  Use them to categorize potential customers, business associates, marketing sites, etc.  Remember, frequent interaction with people in your circles will increase your business' name recognition and can indirectly increase it's SEO.

Use your business' circles for marketing and messaging.  For example, if your shop has a sale on a particular item or items, you can announce this to your circles (followers).  And...you can choose which circle(s) will get the message.

3.  G+ events (online invitations) is another useful G+ tool in business.  Events allows you to invite people inside your circles (and even non-G+ users) to a certain event, sale or promotion that your business is having.  Even the events invitation has images that you can choose to promote your product or business ventures.  I referred to G+ events in Part 3 of this series and provided an example of it's use.

I want to show you an example of how a shop owner set up her G+ page.  She is Janelle of Emmaline Bags and I love the way she has presented herself and her business in her G+ "about" page.

In Part 1 of this series, I emphasized how important first impressions are and how you can design your "hover information" to invite people to view your page.  People will make a decision on whether or not they want to visit your page based on what they see....their first impression.

For an example of a good way to do this, I will show you what Janelle's first impression, hover info. looks like.

If you hover your mouse over Janelle's profile picture or name anywhere on G+, this is what you will see.  I placed red numbers in the picture so I could make a few comments about it.

1.  Janelle chose to use her name and a picture of herself for this page.  This works great because it appears more personal and there is an instant connection between her name and her product.  This design is optional.  You can also choose to use a separate business page using a business name and/or logo for the profile picture.  The choice is up to you.

2.  There is a "contact me" icon at the top of her page (easily found) that allows the visitor to instantly leave a message for Janelle.  When you click on the icon, a window pops up that looks like this:

3.  The cover photo tells all....the business name, product info and two sample pictures of the product.  And the business is associated with it's owner by having a personal profile picture.

4.  The snippet of information under the profile picture gives a quick summary of Janelle and her business.

Next is Janelle's "About" page.  Again, I'll make a few comments corresponding to the red numbers.

ignore the little green check marks and ? symbol...that's
my computer's internet security symbol (I forgot to remove it!)

1.  Her introduction is a concise summary of who she is and what she does with a link to her business website.  Make the introduction short (2-3 sentences) and include only important information.  If it's too long, people will skip it.

2.  The information in the "employment" and "education" section are shown underneath her profile picture.  Again, keep it short and concise....otherwise people won't take time to read it.

3. Her email address is included on this page and is easily found.

4.  Links to her shop, blog and social media sites are listed with clickable links to each.  This is very important.

In my opinion, Janelle and her business are well represented by her profile picture, cover photo and her "about" page.  Now all she needs to do is fill her circles.  That leads me to how she can do it.....

One week from today, on August 4th, I will be participating in a multi-hosted G+ Blog Hop.  We are going to ask that everyone link up their G+ profile page (personal and/or business) so that bloggers/sm. business owners can share information and "circle" each other.

I hope that you can join us.  If you haven't done so already, spruce up your profile and cover photo and be sure to include a snippet of information about you or your business underneath your profile picture.  That will be what people see when they click on your link at the party.  Make a good first impression so you will make lots of new friends!

As I've said before, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.  You can leave a message in the comment section at the end of this post or email me at shasta(dot)intheoldroad(at)gmail(dot)com.

Build A Contact Page For Your Blog

I haven't been feeling very energetic lately so I don't have some cute craft or big DIY project to show you.  However, I do have something to share.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have been "working" at the LinkyHere.com site to help build up their linky party directory and revitalize their blog.  I have enjoyed it so much because I get to meet new bloggers and discover all of the fun, creative and interesting linky parties that are in blogland.

Part of my "job" is to contact the the author/owner of a blog.  To do that, I need the author/owner's email address.  Easy, right?  NO!

Finding the email address was sometimes very frustrating for me.  Some blogs have the email icon among their social media icons near the top of the page.  If you click on said icon, you are usually brought to a page that allows you to sign up for an email subscription to their site or a pre-filled email/info form.  Not exactly what I was looking for.

Other blogs, thankfully, had a "contact" or "about" page.  Most of the time, the blog author/owner's email address could be found there.  But not always.  Sometimes it would contain more information about the blog author or advertising information.  No email address.

Unfortunately, some blogs had nothing!  After searching those blogs with no success, I had to obtain the email address from the Blogger profile information (if that's available).

Why should you care about this?  What if I was associated with a company that was interested in your blog for advertising purposes?  How much time do you think I would take trying to find your email address?  Not long!

That's why I think every blog should have a "Contact" page easily accessible at the top of their blog (in the "tabs" section).  This page should contain every contact source with accompanying links (if available).  The email address should be front and center!  I put my email address in a clip art frame that I got from The Graphics Fairy to make it stand out on the page.

Having bio information or adveriser/sponsor information on the page is certainly acceptable, just make sure that your email address is not buried among the information.

Here are a few blog's contact pages that I found helpful when trying to develop my own.

Some people don't want to list their personal email address on their blog.  I didn't either.  I created a separate email address that I only use for blogging.  Most email programs (like gmail, hotmail and yahoo) have email forwarding options available so you can have all of your email come to one site.

I have been working on my blog's Contact page but I must admit that it's not pretty.  I need to work on making it interesting but I have failed in the inspiration department lately.  I need to spend more time on Pinterest :)

I hope I didn't offend anyone with this post.  I'm not trying to tell everyone how to design their blog.  I just wanted to share my "email searching" experience with you.  If you already have your email address easily accessible (and many blogs do)...good for you!  If not, I hope this post will benefit you in some way.  I love to see bloggers succeed.

Pin-tabulous Tuesday #11 - Garden Decor

Welcome to another Pin-tabulous Tuesday.  I have been collecting pictures of gardens lately.  I absolutely love it when someone uses structures, signs and "junk" to decorate their outdoor space.  Today, I'm sharing some pins from my Pinterest board titled "garden design".

IMPORTANT:  Please do NOT pin an image from this blog post.  The pins (photos) shown on this blog post are NOT my property and should NOT be referenced back to my blog in any way.  Please refer to the original source if you would like to pin an image.

I will start with a pin from my friend, Mindy.  She has an old mailbox nestled in her garden to hold her gardening tools, gloves and other necessities.  I love that...everything right where you need it!

source
Got an old boat?  Make it into a garden....love this!

source
Make your raised garden stand out with a burst of color!

source
I've seen mosaic stepping stones before but look at this mosaic concrete bench...gorgeous!

source
Look at this chest repurposed as a porch/patio accent piece....how creative!

source
My sister thinks this next one is a little creepy...I think it's unique, beautiful garden art.  What do you think?

source
LOVE the ladder and lanterns hanging from the trees in this garden.

source
Lastly, another one of my favorites...a vintage bicycle to decorate the garden.  I love the music sheet pinwheel and the beautiful flowers in the basket.

Such great ideas to decorate the outside of your home.  Thanks for joining me.  I hope you were inspired as much as I was :)

All Star Block Party #7 Features!

You guys rocked the party last week!  It was really hard to choose just 4 link ups this week :/  In fact, I started this post 3 hours ago and am just now getting around to publishing it.  Sorry, I got lost (in a good way!) in some of your blogs.

One of my favorite projects was this gorgeousness by Bliss Ranch.  She repurposed an antique dresser into a portable bar.  Just look at the sides of it....LOVE!

Just so you know, I got lost in the loveliness of Bliss' "gallery of projects" page on her blog.  If you like the dresser/portable bar, you'll love some of her other projects.  I promise you won't be disappointed!

Oh, and how about this super cool idea?  Woven Home turned her entry closet into a welcoming station with a great bench!  I've been wanting to do this to one of my closets too.  I love the soothing colors and it's the first thing you see when you come in the door.

I'm a sucker for burlap wreaths and this one, by Ruby and Arthur, is one of my favorites.  I love the clean lines and simplicity of it....and it looks fabulous on the chippy old shutter.  Perfect!

Finally, I have to show you the answer to my prayers.  I've been trying to find a simple, delicious drink that I can make for my teenage son during this oppressive hot summer.  He is one of those kids that won't drink water....even when I "flavor" it with something.  But, he loves lemonade and limeade.  So thank you, Little Susie Homemaker, for linking this up to our party.  Also, for the great sugar/Stevia conversion chart...I needed that!

If your project was featured today, please take an All Star Block Party featured button to place on your blog.  You deserve it!

In The Old Road

My fellow All Star Block Party hosts will also be selecting a few projects to feature also.  You can find them here:

Please join us this Wednesday, July 25th, for another All Star Block Party.  I look forward to seeing what you've done!

What Can Google+ Do For YOU? - Part 3 (blogger benefits)

Welcome to part 3 of my informative series on Google+ (G+).  In this part of the series, I will explain how using G+ can help you, the blogger, increase the growth of your blog.  I will cover four topics:  SEO and the +1 button, G+ integration with Blogger and Gmail, Google events and Google hangouts.

You can refer to the first two parts of this series by clicking below:
Part 1 - Introduction to G+ and Setting Up a Profile
Part 2 - Understanding and creating G+ Circles

SEO and the +1 Button

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is a HUGE factor in growing your blog.  We all know how popular Google Search is.  Google will recommend and rank your blog based on how well people trust your blog or recommend it's content.  That information will affect your position in the search engine's result page.  What can you do to increase your potential rank in Google search results (i.e. search engine optimization)?

Remember, in part 2 of this series, when I told you to add the +1 button to your blog?  Now I'll tell you why this is so important.  The +1 button for G+ is similar to Facebook's "like button".  When somebody reads your content on G+ and gives it a +1, they are essentially recommending it to others.  The same thing happens when someone reads a post on your blog.  By clicking on +1 at the end of your blog post, your reader is recommending it to others.

The +1 has an indirect effect on your site’s search rank.  And it's all related to how much your site (blog) is recommended!

The +1 button is a very popular tool on G+.  The more content that you post to G+, the greater chance of someone "+1 'ing" you.  The more contacts in your circles, the greater chance of your content being read and "+1 'd".

Sharing your blog posts to G+ is very easy in Blogger.  If your blog is connected to your G+ page, you will automatically receive a prompt to share the post on G+ as soon as the content is published.  If you want to learn more about connecting your blog to G+, click here.  To share your WordPress blog post, simply copy/paste the post URL into the "share what's new..." box.

I defer to this source to bring up a very important point.

"(G+) pages have the +1 button which can be integrated with your website. This means if someone +1's your Google+ page, your website automatically gets a +1 and vice-versa. This can substantially increase the number of +1's of your website's home page and as a consequence, indirectly impact your home page's rank in Google."

G+ Integration with Blogger and Gmail
Do you use Blogger and/or Gmail (both Google products)?  In Part 2, I mentioned how easy it is to add the +1 button to your blog on the Blogger platform.  It is easily accessible in the "add a gadget" window...in fact it's the first "gadget" that you will see.

Also, when your blog or blog post appears in the Google Search results page, your G+ profile stats will often appear with it.  For example, if I do a Google search for azaleas, this is what I see on the Google Search results page:

In the search result for my blog post about azaleas is my G+ information....my profile picture and how many G+ connections that I have.  Notice that it's not how many people I have in my circles but how many people have me in their circles.  Remember that...it's important.  It all goes back to how many people recommend you or your blog.

This brings me to something Google calls "personalized search".  The best explanation for this can be found here.
  1. You publish a page on your site.
  2. You +1 it, or share it on Google+. (Note that you cannot +1 your site's page via your Google+ page as it is not allowed by Google+. In fact Google+ pages cannot +1 anything on the Internet except for Google+ posts.)
  3. A person who has circled you on Google+ signs into a Google product. (This Google product need not to be only Google+ but any other Google product like Blogger, Gmail etc.)
  4. That person searches for a keyword on Google that is related to your published post.
If ALL of the above four conditions are satisfied then your page will appear higher in that person's search results. Google calls it "Search, plus your world"or "Personalized search."

G+ is also incorporated into Gmail.  You can use G+ circles as search filters in Gmail.  For example, let's say that you want see only the emails from your DIY/craft blog friends (assuming that you have a circle labeled with that name), then just type circle: DIY/craft blog friends into the search bar at the top of the Gmail page.  You will then see only the emails from that group.

Also, if you search for an email and that person has a G+ profile, then his/her G+ information will pop up...and it will be automatically updated.

Google+ Events
One of the newest applications available on G+ is "Events".  Events allow you to invite your friends, family, blog readers, etc. to a certain "event".  It's an online invitation!  The best part is that you can design it yourself using the provided templates or make one of your own.  You can even add your own photos to enhance the information about your event.

Bloggers can use this in many ways. Let me give you an example.  One of my favorite bloggers, Debbie from Debbiedoos.com, recently used G+ Events to invite bloggers to her next Copycat Challenge Link Party.  Here is a snippet of what it looks like:

Debbiedoo's Copycat Challenge August 1, 2012
Cool, huh?  Just think of all of the possibilities that this can have in the blogging world...you can invite people to link parties, blog hops, giveaways, sponsorships, etc.  You can invite anyone, even people that don't use G+!  To find out how to set up your own "event" invitation in G+, click here.

Google+ Hangouts
Another very useful G+ tool for bloggers is called "Hangouts".  Hangouts are simply video chat sessions that you can have with up to 9 people at one time.  This application can also be very useful to bloggers.  For example, you can participate in a "hands-on" tutorial on DIY, craft, cooking, sewing, etc. and then share that video on your blog.  Or hold a visual "meeting" with some of your blogger groups or team members.

Starting or joining a hangout is very easy.  Click here or here to find out how.

If you made it to the end of this post...thank you!  I know today's post was long but I wanted to tell you about all the great benefits of using G+ in your blogging endeavors.  And, once again, I will remind you about the multi-hosted Google+ Blog Hop that is happening on August 4th.

Hopefully, you will want to start using G+ or be more involved in your current account.  If you join us for the G+ blog hop, make sure that your G+ account is ready for lots of traffic!  If you need an update on how to prepare your G+ profile and circles for the hop, you can refer to Part 1 and Part 2 of this series.  Also, please feel free to email me if you have any questions :)

The next (and last) part of this series will be on Saturday, July 28th.  I will discuss the benefits of using G+ in small business....such as Etsy or Storenvy shops and boutiques.  I hope you'll join me!
