After my last crafting failures, I jumped right back on the horse and tried again. This time with a book page project.
I have seen lots of book page craft projects (esp. wreaths) all over blogland and I have been wanting to make one. When I saw this on BHG.com, I knew it was for me. Book page flowers...perfect!
The first part of this project involves preparing the book pages. By this I mean tearing the pages out of a book, painting them and "baking" them (I'll explain this in detail in a minute).
Since I didn't want my husband or children to give me weird looks or ask me "what, on earth, are you doing?" I decided to do this after everyone had gone to bed. I'm telling you this because my pictures for this project are hor-ri-ble! I took them at midnight and I hope they make some sense to you.
OK, here's what I did. I tore pages out of a dollar store dictionary and "painted" each one (both sides) with watered down craft paint....pink, yellow, orange....flower colors. Once they were nice and wet, I put them on an aluminum foil lined cookie sheet and "baked" them in a 200 degree oven for about 5 minutes to dry them out.
At that point, each page is very stiff. To make it more pliable, I crumbled it up into a ball then smoothed it out again. Next, I cut petal shapes out of each page making sure that I had at least one or two of them in a rectangular shape.
Here are some pictures of those steps.
You'll see that I scalloped one edge of each book page in the top left picture. Ignore that. I was trying to create a shortcut and it didn't work out. Also, you'll see different color petals used in some of the photos. That's because I kept forgetting to take pictures and had to "catch up" on my photos on the next flower I made.
Next comes assembling the flower. I used the rectangular shaped petals first to make the center part of the flower. Simply roll them up (short end to short end) and pinch the bottom together with your fingers. Wrap each larger petal around that, pinching the bottom together as you go. My BFF (aka, my hot glue gun) helped me out alot with this part. I put a small dab of glue at the base of each petal (about where I was going to pinch it at) and glued it to the forming flower. Does that make sense? Here, some pictures may help.
Here are some pictures of the finished product.
Just a little FYI, I used a 5x7 size paperback dictionary for my pages. Each flower was made out of one page. My flowers measure about 3 inches in diameter. Obviously, the bigger the page, the bigger the flower.
Lessons that I learned: the shapes of the individual petals that you cut out should not match or be "perfect". Variation makes the flower more "real".
The colors that I used were very muted. I think this would also look great with bright colors (perfect for Spring) but I used what I had.
Again, sorry for the terrible pictures. Doing this a night was so worth it...avoiding the weird looks and questions.
This was so easy. Next, I think I will paint and bake some coffee filters to make something. That's for another night:)
