I live in Picayune, Miss., a small town about 50 miles northeast of New Orleans. We are "high and dry" but still got soaked with wind driven rain. Overall, we lost the daily convenience of electricity...mainly air conditioning and refrigeration.
I also lost my internet connection for almost three days! I know that this is a "luxury" and I should really not be so selfish but I need my internet fix. Every day! I am addicted. BAD!
So, I'm sitting in a house with no electricity...no tv, no internet, only the drone of the radio announcer repeating the same thing over and over. Rain, wind, flood...rain, wind, flood. I just had to do something! Anything. Then I saw it...an empty UPS Express mail box. I could make something with that! That's when I realized that I have another addiction...to cardboard boxes. I'm not ashamed of it. Empty cardboard boxes can be used for so many things!
I decided to make a laptop desk/organizer out the UPS box. I needed something to set my laptop on when I held it in my lap to create a buffer between the heat of the computer and my lap. The box was the perfect size for my 15.6" laptop. I decided to turn it into a laptop desk organizer of sorts. I'm not the most organized person in the world and I'm constantly loosing my "blog stuff". You know, the calender, address book and little notepad to scribble on. Then, of course, there is the pen. I can never keep a pen handy!
So, this is what I did. I wrapped the UPS box in the brown packing paper that was used to secure the items (medicine) during shipment. I didn't want the box markings to show through the gift wrapping paper that I used to cover and "decorate" the box with.
I used some of my favorite Spring wrapping paper to cover it with. I know it's September but this was one of those "use what you've got" kind of days.
I kept the end flap attached (from the open end of the box) but cut off the little side tabs that I did not need. I glued (the long sides) of a piece of satin ribbon to make a pen holder. Then, I glued a small piece of velcro to the flap and the end of the box so I could close the box while it was in my lap.
Inside of the box, I keep my "blog supplies"....my "idea" notebook, an HTML cheat sheet, an internet address book and my blog organizer/calender notebook.
My little UPS box keeps me more organized when I blog. Maybe Isaac's visit was good for something :)

I know what you mean about the internet addiction! Very thrifty and creative!
ReplyDeleteVery cute Shasta, could you share your HTML Cheat Sheet?
ReplyDeleteWell, how clever! I am glad you are ok! I had no idea you were that close to Isaac!! don't you just love hurricane season!
ReplyDeleteI love that! We are still getting rain from Isaac up in Illinois!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea! I love the floral pattern on your organizer. I'm a new follower from Mom's Monday Mingle!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea you that you lived (kind of) near me! YAY!! We try to go to NO once a year at least. I am thankful that you had no damage. I live in Northern Louisiana, and school was even cancelled here. We just had heavy winds and a steady rain. Boy, our problems started when we left for MO to go to my class reunion. We drove 7 hours straight in horrible hurricane weather! It never let up. Then we got to my little hometown and had tornadoes all around us! I had forgotten what those tornado sirens sounded like.
ReplyDeleteYou are one creative lady!! I love what you did to stay busy. That is so clever. I'm so glad to know I'm the only one who loves cardboard boxes. :) My hubby was fussing about my large collection, just the other day. LOL
Very cute idea. Your organizer is very cheerful, and I love the pattern and colors!
ReplyDeleteOf course you made something when all the power was out and there was nothing to do but watch the storm!! Industrious and creative even at the worst of times. No wonder I'm always in awe of you.
ReplyDeleteVery creative! We only lost power for about 3 days as well. We live about 35 miles north of Baton Rouge so we were a little east of the eye so it wasn't too bad! I'm a new follower!
ReplyDeleteI love that idea! I"m glad you weren't too affected by the hurricane!
ReplyDeleteI"m your newest follower from the Monday Mingle :)

Hi Shasta! That is so cute! I love how you used what you had! Nothing wrong with using that beautiful wrapping paper in September! I so don't like putting my laptop on my lap! I'm glad ya'll are OK! Blessings from Bama!
ReplyDeleteHi Shasta, we too here in the Philippines had some freak weather. Flooding all around the city which brought work and school at a standstill. Quite absurd really if you see the pictures of people wading through chest high muddy water! A good thing I live more than a 100 meters above sea level and weren't too much affected. I too did some craft projects while praying for the rains to stop! A good idea, your laptop organizer! Patsy from

This is a cool idea--glad that things went basically okay for you during the hurricane, although I agree that it's no fun to be without internet!
