This is what I've been trying to get finished. A birdhouse decorated with a mosaic of broken dishes.
I have been wanting to make one of these since I saw one on my dream porch at Susan's Between Naps on the Porch blog.

I started my project with this. Some dinner plates from Goodwill and a hammer.
I chose one of the plates for the birdhouse because of the pattern and colors. I also had a set of four of them in case I needed more pieces of a certain color.
I bought an unfinished wood birdhouse from Wal-Mart for $2.96 and had a silver candlestick from Goodwill to use as a stand. This is a picture of everything together with the plate pattern that I used.
I covered the plate with a towel before I hit it with the hammer for safety and gathered all of the broken pieces in a shallow tray.
The last part was just gluing the plate pieces onto the sides of the birdhouse. I was fortunate enough to have some grout left over from a bathroom remodel a few years ago. I mixed a little of it with water and used it to fill in the gaps between the broken plate pieces.
Initially, I had planned to add some broken dishes to the roof of the birdhouse but decided against it. I fell in love with the soft sage green paint that I used on the birdhouse "floor" so I just painted the roof the same color.
I spray painted the candlestick a cream color and glued the base of the birdhouse to it for a stand. I think it makes the birdhouse stand out more.
Here it is with some of my other treasures.
I have about 8 plates left just waiting for my hammer. Wonder what I should make next?

Oh Shasta! The birdhouse is adorable! You are such a clever crafter! The porch is so pretty! Glad you found the time to create this project! I'm sure you'll think of something to do with all of those plates! Blessings from Bama!
ReplyDeleteCute! I have always wanted to try mosaic-ing something. I love this idea!
ReplyDeleteOh, this is really beautiful! I have a plain birth house and didn't know what to do with it yet, but I found inspiration here!! Thank you for sharing! Liz
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm looking for something else to cover with broken plates now, ha. It's such an easy and cheap project to do...there are tons of dishes at Goodwill and garage sales.
DeleteThat is so pretty! I would make a serving tray--but then I always want to make a serving tray...
ReplyDeleteHope your sweet boy is doing good!
I love it! I want it! I'm going to have to make one just like it!!!!
ReplyDeleteGo for it, Heather! It's fun :)
DeleteThis is really pretty. I really like mosaic. I always say we should learn to do it with how many dishes we break around here.

I made a mirror with some of our broken MacKenzie-Childs. It is in the powder room at our lake house. We are preparing to make another one for our powder room {here at home} soon. :D
ReplyDeleteYou did a fantastic job on your little bird house....too cute!
This turned out so good! I haven't done any mosaic in 6 or 7 years. makes me really want to get out the old supplies.... Nice job.

ReplyDeleteHee Hee! This sounds like fun. Me and my kids would get a real bang out of breaking dishes on purpose! The after effect that you achieved it so pretty. I love that it is also up on a pedestal! Thanks so much for this fun project!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Susie
This is so pretty! We hope to see you back next week to our "Strut Your Stuff Saturday." Thanks for coming!! -The Sisters
ReplyDeleteShasta, your birdhouse turned out so cute. My friend, Dolly did this on a large birdhouse and I love it! Last summer I went to her house and her, myself, and three others made stepping stones out of broken glass. We found or drew a pattern, laid it on the concrete that we poured into our form and placed the glass to make our design. They were so fun! I will be posting about them after Mothers Day. Hubby and I are working on a rose garden. They are going to be the stepping stones in the middle. Thanks for sharing this with Share Your Cup!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Jann
This is so much fun and looks really nice. I don't have a garden to justify smashing my plates in order to make this, but I wish I did!
ReplyDeleteI'd love it if you could share this at my monthly celebration of the outdoors link party! http://craftbotics.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/festival-fever-co-host-week-2.html
