Kitchen Update for the New Year

A while back, I started "remodeling" my kitchen with a $6.00 budget.  No, I did not put the decimal in the wrong place.  I really had only $6.00 to spend on this project.  If you're new to this blog, check out the original post here.

So here we are, almost three months later, and I still haven't finished my "remodel".  Hmmm, that never happens, right?

You're wondering what's got me all hyped up about my kitchen again, right?  (Say "yes").

OK, I'll tell you.  I was snooping around Houzz.com and found this wonderful article, "12 Ways To Have A Nicer Kitchen This Year".  There are several good ideas about lighting, organization, types of sinks or faucets and cabinets.  You should really check it out.  But I'm warning you, that site is addicting.

What really got my attention was this section of the article:  "Create an accent wall".  Hellooooo!  That's what I wanted to do with my backsplash.  This is the photo from their article.

Yeah, I'd say that was an "accent wall".  Love that backsplash!

If you remember, I spent my $6.00 on some 2oz. paint samples that I found at a local "salvage" store for 50 cents each.  I have a plan...I'm going to paint a backsplash above my kitchen countertops.  Crazy, huh?  Yep. But I only had $6.00 to spend.

I created a board on Pinterest to store inspiration pictures on and have been "practice painting" but haven't actually started on the kitchen wall yet.

Here is a sample of my "practicing".  I've posted the first picture before.  It's a cabinet drawer front that I painted in a pink and brown color using a harlequin pattern.  I've decided that 'harlequin' will be the pattern I will use for the backsplash.  In that example, I used a "sponge off" technique with a brown glaze to obtain a textured look.  I posted about it here.

For the next "practice" sample, I used several different colors (acrylic craft paint) to paint a small square mosaic pattern.  In some of the squares, I used two different colors.

I'll be working on the real thing very soon....as soon as the Hubs starts his day shift at work.  It's best that he not be home when I start making my mess :)
